Resumen

El artículo presenta una revisión crítica de las interpretaciones apologéticas de la conquista del Oeste, elaboradas por la historiografía norteamericana. Este primer ejercicio reflexivo está acotado a problematizar las narrativas que, durante varias décadas, prevalecieron como explicación de las políticas de remoción sobre las naciones originarias2 que habitaron los territorios del sudeste del río Mississippi hasta fines de la década de 1830. El trabajo sintetiza las representaciones tradicionales del pasado sobre la relación entre gobernantes y las comunidades nativas en la expansión hacia el oeste; enfoca la interacción entre la acción colectiva de los nativos americanos en los años sesenta y setenta del siglo XX y el surgimiento de las primeras revisiones críticas del pasado, que incorporaron como fuentes a los testimonios de las poblaciones originarias. En la parte final, problematiza ciertos tópicos impuestos por la historiografía sobre los antagonismos entre gobernantes, las naciones originarias residentes en el sudeste del río Mississippi y su secuela de despojo del hábitat original de las tribus.
