FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE BRIDGE: ‘BORDER WOMEN’ AND THEIR PRESENCE IN SUR
Keywords:
Sur magazine, Ana O’Neill, Alicia Moreau de Justo, intellectual bilocation, counter-hegemonyAbstract
Despite having been considered as «a bridge between America and Europe» (Gramuglio, 1983; King, 1990), Sur magazine had different stances regarding these two poles. In this crossing of perspectives, it is of interest the positioning of those authors who have traveled both the countries regarded as «hegemonic» as well as those considered as «non-hegemonic». Within this perspective, Ana O’Neill and Alicia Moreau de Justo, who inhabited both United States and England, respectively, as well as «peripheral» countries (Puerto Rico and Argentina), find common ground with Braidotti’s postulation about nomadic subjects, defined as those with a critical conscience, resistant to establish themselves in socially codified ways of thought and behavior, those who demonstrate a political resistance towards hegemonic visions, those who can «blur the frontiers without burning the bridges». Therefore, this «border women» share the experience of «both sides» of the bridge between America and Europe, as proposed by the magazine. From this perspective, they write with a critical approach, focused in «marginal» characters in society, as well as in the academic and political contemporary panorama. This intellectual bilocation, which imbues a «counterhegemonic» tone, does not idealize some of the non-Hispanic countries more positively regarded by the magazine (France, United States, England and Germany) and allows them to write from a cultural autonomy.References
