Abstract

In this paper, we explore a form of radical transcendence through a literary corpus: science fiction—not only through its bibliographic existence but especially through its expansion into audiovisual arts, comic books, and the vast realm of electronic games. We are particularly interested in fictional universes that involve technologies associated with so-calledartificial intelligence, in which certain artifacts become numina —powerful objects to which humanity unconditionally submitsand offers reverence. Our aim is to examine how, within this textual corpus, the idea emerges that at some point in humanity’s material technological development, technological numina may arise. In this case, the idea is that certain artifacts could become deities, giving rise to what can be called theological engineering (hereafter TE).
