THE INSULAR CARIBBEAN IN THE SOUTH. PUERTO RICO, BETWEEN COLONIALISM AND IDENTITY

Abstract

In our project Un mapa de las escrituras femeninas en Sur (2023–2024), we observed that the presence of Latin American women writers in the magazine became increasingly notable over the years. We focused, in particular, on two Puerto Rican writers who, as representatives of Caribbean voices, resonated in the southern pages of one of the most important literary magazines of the 20th century in Latin America.We consider the contributions of writers María Teresa Babín and Nilita Vientós Gastón in Issue No. 293 of Sur as an expression of the work of intellectual women made visible as public figures who articulated their opinions, ideologies, and reflections on the literary and historical reality of Puerto Rico in 1965. The authors present their critique of colonialism (Quijano, 2000; Mignolo, 2003) and provide evidence of the cultural, legal, and political resistance of Puerto Ricans against U. S. imperialism. Despite Sur being considered an «apolitical» Argentine magazine, we demonstrate that at various points in its history, there are clear political stances, as exemplified in this case.
