Abstract

Samanta Schweblin's body of work addresses the public and private issues of modern societies. This paper analyzes the communication difficulties in a selected corpus from her first short story collection, El núcleo del disturbio (2002), through the lens of cultural studies. These difficulties stem from the predominance of new values, transformations in lifestyles and spaces that are revealed as heterotopic or “non-places”. The stories “Hacia la alegre civilización de la Capital”, “La pegajosa baba de un sueño de revolución” and “La pesada valija de Benavides” depict characters trapped in dynamics of miscommunication and/or misunderstanding: office workers stranded in a train station, disillusioned men dreaming of freedom in a bar and a murderer mistaken for an artist. The critique of modern values emerges through the deterioration of language at a pragmatic level.
